White rhino, 13”L 7”H

I built the white rhino in 2017 after reading an article about the successful conservation of the southern white rhino in South Africa. However, the same cannot be said about the northern white rhino subspecies, which has been listed as "functional extinct" in 2025, when the last male passed away. Other African and Asian rhinos' future survival remains uncertain.

This sculpture was built with a white clay. Raku firing was used to create the crackling pattern in the clear glaze in a reduction environment containing only newsprint. The rhino was so heavy it took two people to pull it from the hot kiln.
