Hare jumps over the moon vase, 8"D 13"H.

This piece was inspired by the famous Chinese fable of "Chang'e flying to the moon", in which the hare is a companion of Chang'e the queen in that cold white palace in the sky. As children, we were told to find the hare on the moon during the Mid Autumn Festival.

The vase and detachable hare stopper were Raku fired. The cloud cover was depicted with a lustre glaze, while the white hare and the moon were glazed with clear glaze to create the crackling pattern in a reduction environment over white clay. I dropped the moon vase while pulling it from the kiln, and had to chase after it as it rolled away, still red hot! Miraculously it did not break.
