I wanted to use bowls and vases as canvases where the shape and relationship of their surfaces are integral to the unique perspectives intended in the design of my paintings. Most of these vessels were made with white or porcelain clay because the white surface maximizes the vibrancy of the glazes. A major challenge in painting with underglazes is that the true colors of the glazes do not develop until they are subjected to heat reaction with clear overglaze in the kiln. Painting a picture is always a guessing game even if it improves with experience.
